VOLUNTEER AT WXEL

We thank you for your interest in volunteering at WXEL!  This is a great way to show your support of an important cultural and educational resource in your community.

The participation of volunteers throughout the year is an important part of WXEL’s success. Volunteers are valued for the time, energy, experience, and expertise they offer us.

As a WXEL volunteer, you get a chance to:

  • meet other WXEL members and talents in our community
  • get a behind-the-scenes look at how the station works
  • have the satisfaction of supporting the station in a personal way
  • students can count their work as community service hours
  • non-profit local organizations can show their involvement with the community by volunteering as a group
  • participate in interesting events

Although we usually do not have regular or weekly volunteer opportunities, we do have many volunteer needs throughout the year that we can keep you advised of via email.

How can you get involved?
Please take the time to fill out our online Volunteer Application Form by clicking on the application button at the top or bottom of this page.

Check off your preferences and also add any skills you have that might be of interest to us. Your responses will allow us to match your preferences against our needs.  If you do not get a call or email back within a week after you submit it, please call the number at the bottom of this section.

Once we have communicated with you, we can include you in our regular "Volunteer Updates" email. We do NOT share your email address or personal information with anyone. We "BCC" or Blind Copy all group emails. Feel free to respond to any email indicating something you would like to help us with.

What volunteer work do we have?
Our Community Outreach Coordinator may need volunteers to assist her at literacy events, or by preparing packets of information for her seminars with teachers, tutors or caregivers of at risk children.  We also have events throughout the year we may need extra "hands" at.

Please note that before we can send you out on these volunteer opportunities, we prefer to get to know you first.  How do we do that? We ask that you first volunteer for our membership drives.

Are there Television volunteer opportunities?
Sort of! Please be aware that volunteer work does NOT usually involve production, even if you have television experience.  That aside, we really can use you to answer phone calls from potential members during our all-important Membership Drives. No solicitation is involved; you follow a simple script and take down information requested on a form provided you.

These drives provide most of our budget, which allows us to provide quality programming and our renowned community outreach services.

Our pledge drives can be exciting, and you can get to know other interesting volunteers, meet local personalities and guest hosts.

Again, once we get to know you better, we can see how else your skills can help fill any specialized needs that may come up!

Television Membership Drives
We prefer to use community non-profit groups to handle the phones during breaks in our special pledge productions.  If you have a non-profit group which can provide 12 volunteers, please fill out the form below indicating the name of the group- and your name also!

Those who are sensitive to bright lights are advised to NOT volunteer for television drives.  There is a good chance you will be seen on live television throughout the evening.
