Dear WXEL Supporter,
Recently you may have read a joint press release from WXEL and WPBT announcing the launch of exploratory talks that might lead to a merger of our two stations. Over the years, many of you have asked why the same programming was on our two stations and couldn’t we find a way to end that. Our discussions of collaboration are in direct response to your concerns.
WXEL has been serving thePalmBeachesand Treasure coast for well over thirty years. WPBT has served the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale region for over fifty years. Both have done so with distinction … educating children, celebrating the arts, and bringing viewers an incredibly wide range of science, natural history, and public affairs programming. Our local programs round out our schedules ranging from stories on current events and local personalities to acknowledging the selfless contribution made by our local heroes serving in areas of combat overseas.
It is important for us to cherish the history of both stations and for them to continue to serve their local communities. That remains a fundamental commitment to you as our discussions proceed. But it is our belief that we can more effectively fulfill our mission by joining forces with WPBT, as they with us, through the creation of South Florida PBS: a brand new public media company designed to serve the entire region from Vero Beach to the Florida Keys and our western communities. This is not one station acquiring the other but, instead, a proposed merger of the strengths and accomplishments of two equals into a media organization prepared to meet the future head on.
I would ask two things of you. First and foremost, WXEL needs your continued financial support throughout the development phase. Our discussions are in response to what so many of you have said and we hope you will signal your support with continued generosity. Second, and no less important, check our website for periodic updates on our progress. You are our shareholders and it is incumbent upon us to keep you informed.
The press release has been posted on our website as will all others that might follow. If you wish to share your thoughts with us, please use the comment box below.
Thank you for your support,
