Greetings from the new WXEL,

Welcome to the President’s Forum.  This is the first of what will be an on-going effort to keep you informed of the many changes you will begin to see on WXEL as well as its internet presence, and to provide you an opportunity to give us your feedback on how well we are doing in fulfilling our mission.   While it will be impossible for me to respond to all of your Emails directly, I will do my best to keep you posted through this web page.

As most of you know by now, WXEL’s ownership changed in July of 2012.  The station now is operated on your behalf by the WXEL Public Broadcasting Corporation, a Florida not-for-profit 501(c)(3) educational corporation with a fully independent, community-based Board of Trustees.  Our new logo reflects our continuing commitment to bring you all that PBS has to offer.   Its tag line, “PBS for the Palm Beaches”, is a simple reminder that WXEL is your local public broadcasting station having recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary serving the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast.  We are proud to be a community partner.

After working many years in senior positions at WNET Channel 13 in New York City, I enthusiastically stepped out of a brief retirement to join with the staff and management of WXEL to help ensure that WXEL remained a local educational & cultural treasure.  My career in public television is a testament to my strong belief in its mission and my second career at WXEL reflects my equally strong belief in the need for a truly local and responsive community broadcaster.

Changes are coming.  For example, many of you requested that our lifestyle channel, Create, be on the air all the time.  Well, we heard you!   So beginning March 1st, Create will become an uninterrupted 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week service of WXEL.  You can watch it over-the-air on Channel 42.2 or on Comcast Channel 201.

Bogart on Movies launched in December 2012.  Hosted by Steve Bogart, the program is produced in the studios of WXEL and can be seen on Friday evenings at 5:30PM with repeats on Saturdays at 10:30AM and 6:00PM – just in time to confirm your weekend movie selection.  Our home page provides some background about the show but a recent article in the Palm Beach Post by staff writer Scott Eyman sums it up best:

“The show’s title leads you to expect a series of shows devoted to Humphrey Bogart movies, but actually it’s a movie review show in the style of Siskel without Ebert, but with Steve Bogart, whose expertise about the movies has to be categorized as genetic – not only was his father Humphrey Bogart, his mother is Lauren Bacall.”

Our website,, also is going through some changes.  We are the process of constructing a brand new website that will be far easier to navigate and will include a host of new and exciting features.  In the meantime, we are focused on updating this site and keeping it current and vital.  Our social media sites also are being updated with added features, information and quicker response to your comments and suggestions.  You can find us on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Ustream, LinkedIN,  Instagram, and Wikipedia.  Hyperlinks to these sites are listed below.

Your continued support of WXEL is vital to our future.  While public television in general and WXEL in particular receives financial contributions from a variety of sources, none provide the continuous and essential support as contributions from you.  You see that thank you on almost all of the PBS programming you enjoy – “this show is made possible with the support from Viewers Like You”.  You are what the “public” in public television means.

Thank you,
Don Sussman
