WXEL Radio: WXEL's Opera Theater

Radio Programming  •  Monthly Radio Highlights  •  Noteworthy News  •  On-Air Announcers

WXEL’s Opera Theater has been on the air since 1999.  The program presents a full-length opera recording each week.  Host Susan Dorchin, a Professor of Voice at Florida Atlantic University, tirelessly scours the libretto and score for each opera and finds interesting facts about the composers.  The result is a comprehensive and illuminating look at some of the greatest works ever written.  WXEL’s Opera Theater is made possible, in part, by a generous grant from the Arthur F. and Alice E. Adams Charitable Foundation.

WXEL's Opera Theater airs Saturdays at 1:00pm,
only on WXEL 90.7FM.

Susan Dorchin, Host

Susan Dorchin has hosted WXEL’s Opera Theater since 1999.  Her musical career began early in the Children’s Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera and singing with the Royal Ballet.  As a student at the Boston Conservatory of Music she received the Arthur B. Whitney award for achieving highest scholastic honor.   She went on to sing a variety of roles with New England Opera Center, Boston Public Television, and the Light Opera of Manhattan.  She taught privately in New York City where her students included professionals enjoying operatic, Broadway, cabaret, rock n’ roll, film, television and voice over careers.  Before joining the faculty of Florida Atlantic University, where she earned her Master of Arts, she taught at Texas Tech University.  In addition to teaching singing, she specializes in vocal rehabilitation.  Eminent New York, Texas, and now Florida otolaryngologists send her patients in need of vocal rehabilitation.  She has developed successful techniques for eliminating vocal nodules.  She has treated people suffering from various vocal dysphonias, as well as those who have lost the capacity for speech due to intubation during surgery.  She is currently studying for a certification in Alexander Technique.

Some of her roles included Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Elvira in L’Italiana in Algeri.  She sang the theme song for a popular children’s television program for WGBH-TV in Boston.
