Thanks to a grant from WETA, the WXEL Community Affairs Dept. has launched the year-long community engagement campaign based on THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA---the Ken Burns film scheduled to air on WXEL DTV42 and on all of the other PBS stations across the country during a premiere broadcast in Fall 2009 (late Sept./early Oct, stay tuned!). The campaign runs Feb. 2009 - Feb. 2010. During this period, project partners will be involved with WXEL's education staff through various events and activities in order to reach a diverse population through this project; this population includes underserved audiences such as minorities and at-risk children and families.
WXEL unofficially kicked-off this media engagement project on Jan. 26, 2009 as a special guest of National Park Trust (NPT) at a private luncheon organized for NPT board members and others. This enjoyable luncheon was held at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge---the northernmost tip of The Everglades National Park, which is located in western Boynton Beach. WXEL's education and outreach staff presented a clip of the series and distributed information about the campaign to the audience of 50 participants. On February 7, 2009, WXEL's education staff and volunteers represented the station and THE NATIONAL PARKS campaign at a special event held at the wildllife refuge---the 10th annual celebration of the refuge's "Everglades Day", which witnessed hundreds of visitors on that particular Saturday. More events and activities at the refuge and other venues will follow throughout the campaign's year-long timeline.
Corporate funding is provided by General Motors and Bank of America. Major funding is provided by the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr. Fund; Corporation for Public Broadcasting; The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations; Park Foundation, Inc.; Public Broadcasting Service; National Park Foundation; The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation; and The Pew Charitable Trusts.
