Andre Gomes López of Port St. Lucie is just 6 years old, and has just won a NATIONAL contest! He came in 2nd in the PBS Kids Go Read contest for his grade level. Andre reads the endearing book to our audience, and his Mom, Shindy López, talks about how he came up with the idea for "How to Get Rid of the Shy Bugs".

Deborah Morgan is the executive director for Palm Beach Harvest; she and her daughter, Holly Morgan, talk about their mission to provide food for the many soup kitchens and homeless services in Palm Beach County who are experincing record demand in this economy.

Bernie Godek is the executive director for Habitat for Humanity, Palm Beach County. He is joined by Deborah Knapp, a local paralegal, who donated her family home to Habitat.

John Gray is the bestselling author of "Men are from Mars, Women are From Venus" as well as a relationship expert. His newest book, "Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice" , and the companion PBS special of the same name, focus on how gender specific hormones can affect communication and interaction between couples. His special premieres this Wednesday, August 18 from 8-10 pm on WXEL TV42.


Ethan Bortnick is a 9 year old piano prodigy from Hollywood Florida. His PBS Special: "Ethan Bortnick and his Musical Time Machine", premiered this past week on WXEL TV42. His interview with Ann shows what a precocious and endearing child he is (he told our host what he once told Oprah: "You have to stay humble.") even after 4 appearances on Jay Leno!)

is the Director of Programs & Grants for the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County.  This foundation researches and presents the William T. Dwyer Awards for Excellence in Education.

Andrew Gross was a collaborator with fellow Palm Beacher, James Patterson, but now is a prominent author in his own right. He talks about his new suspense thriller: "Reckless"

Award winning novelist, Jonathon King, talks about his latest book, "The Styx", a departure from his popular detective novel series. The plot revolves around an oft rumored, racially charged incident on the island of Palm Beach in the early 20th century.

Deboran & Joel Shlian collaborate both as doctors in their South Florida practice, but also as authors of 3 medical mysteries. The latest, "Rabbit in the Moon" is an international thriller, that takes place in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Macao and California-all places the’ve spent time.

World Cup Mania...and remembering Haiti

Ilan Elkaim, a long time contributor to Florida Forum, calls in from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, his hometown, after a trip to South Africa to watch the US and England vie in a match closely watched around the US.  He tells us what it is like to be a real 'futbol' fan.

Josef Schulz runs a soccer academy in Boca Raton. He trained Jozy Altidore, a young soccer superstar of Haitian descent, now playing in the World Cup on the US team. Schulz tells us how the sport is gaining creditbility in the US, where fans are more apt to follow the game we call "football."

Wayne Richards is a Commissioner of the Port of Palm Beach, and the creator of the Palm Beach County Haiti Relief Coalition. He gives us an update of what's happening in Haiti now, months after a devastating earthquake, and after most relief organizations have reduced their numbers and many have forgotten their dire straits.

Rachel Schlufman is interviewed by Ilan Elkaim. She and her sister survived life in a Nazi labor camp.  Nearly all other family members perished in Auchwitz.Near the end of the war, US bomber pilot Robert Freeman dropped leaflets over this labor camp.  50 years later, there was a bittersweet meeting between Schlufman and her wartime hero - face to face in South Florida.

Dr. Bernd Wollschlaeger of Miami is the author of “A German Life”, and his story is remarkable.
He was the son of a proud Nazi Tank Commander, who broke with his father as a teen, moved in with descendants of the Valkyrie general (the Nazi who was assassinated when failing to kill Hitler), and eventually converted to Judaism; an amazing story indeed.

Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach encourages everyone to read "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak as part of their Read Together campaign. Wayne Barton is the founder of the "Wayne Barton Study Center" . After 20 years as a Boca Raton policeman, he decided there was a need to help local youth. He created this center in Boca Raton for underprivileged children to learn responsibility, respect, and the importance of education. He rewards those who are diligent and abide by the spirit and rules of the center with full scholarships to the college of their choice. To date more than 100 children have received a scholarship. Sandra Weatherspoon is a career educator at the School Board of Palm Beach County. She discusses the  programs her Curriculum Department develops for teachers on African and African-American history, especially at High School level. Serena Hopkinson and her daughter , Natalie, purchased and restored a historic 1920's  home in West Palm Beach. They subsequently uncovered its fascinating history: it was called the "Cracker Johnson House" after the unique man who built it. Johnson, half white, half African American, made his fortune in real estate and bootlegged whiskey.  Story has it he even bailed out the city of West Palm Beach with a $50,000 loan during the Depression. She spoke about her experiences as a battered woman, but once given advice and resources by AVDA, was able to leave her huband and start life anew. She is now back in college and living a life free of fear.
