COUNTDOWN TO ANALOG BROADCASTING SHUT-OFF
Note the date and time: June 12, 2009 until midnight is the last day of analog broadcasting in the United States. Many stations will have transitioned by that time.
Americans with older, analog televisions, which receive analog television's broadcasts by antenna, must switch to digital by midnight, June 12, 2009. Cable and satellite customers are unaffected by this change. If you don't buy a digital model television, a converter box will change the digital signals back to analog. The boxes range from $ 50 to $ 75 each, beginning January 1, 2008, U.S. households may request up to two $ 40 coupons, to apply to the purchase of the boxes.
To request a coupon, consumers can apply online at http://www.dtv2009.gov.
The government also has set up a 24-hour hotline to take requests, 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009).
Our friends at Vermont Public Television (VPT) have compiled a great list of digital television FAQs. Check them out by clicking here.
Cable and Digital Satellite viewers are unaffected by this transition.
Digital converter boxes for older televisions are available at many local electronics retailers in the area.
