15th Annual WXEL Holiday Book Drive 2012
LOCAL INITIATIVE BOOK DRIVE TO BENEFIT BOYNTON BEACH STUDENTS BEGINS ON NOVEMBER 16, 2012: BOYNTON BEACH, FLA. October 15, 2012 Boynton Reads, a Boynton Beach community effort to improve the literacy of elementary school children in Boynton Beach, will kick-off a two-month book drive from November 16, 2012 through January 8, 2013. The kick-off is scheduled to be held November 16, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at WXEL TV Studios, 3401 S. Congress Ave. in Boynton Beach and will highlight the first donation of new books for the drive and a light reception for the partners supporting Boynton Reads.
Elementary school-age students need to practice their reading skills to improve their literacy rates, said Laura Orlove, a literacy coach at Forest Park Elementary school who started the Boynton Reads initiative. Many students need to practice reading after school, but lack books that are at the correct reading level. This book drives goal is to ensure our students continue to improve their reading skills, and feel pride and accomplishment that they have their own books that they can read.
According to the 2010 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), 28 percent of county fourth grade students attending public school read below grade level. County public school students speak 148 languages and dialects, according to the school district. Many elementary school students face challenges in reading proficiently or on their grade level, Orlove said.
