WXEL ADVOCACY

LOCAL:  WXEL Community Advisory Board

The WXEL Community Advisory Board meets three times per year at WXEL with Marlene Ross to discuss programming, policy, and community affairs.

Per the requirements for public broadcasting stations receiving funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), WXEL holds regular Community Advisory Board (CAB) meetings for compliance purposes as a community licensee.  The WXEL CAB is comprised of individuals from WXEL's viewing and listening area who have an appreciation and understanding of public broadcasting in general.  Marlene Figueroa Ross, the WXEL Director of Community Affairs, holds these meetings 3 times/year at the WXEL offices located in Boynton Beach in order to discuss programming, policy, and community affairs.  These meetings give the CAB an opportunity to make recommendations to the WXEL Board of Directors regarding these issues.  Please click here to view listing of members.

STATE:  Florida Public Broadcasting Service

Florida Public Broadcasting Service coordinates with Jerry Carr and Marlene Ross throughout the year for information, or to alert WXEL about future projects or other opportunities.

FPBS represents all of the PBS and NPR stations serving the markets in the state of Florida, including WXEL TV/FM.  FPBS may serve as a project facilitator or even as a project partner for WXEL.  In preparing key reports, FPBS regularly seeks educational and engagement information from the education team at WXEL and also from other public broadcasting stations.  Throughout the year it provides information to WXEL regarding different opportunities for collaboration with both FPBS and possibly other PBS or NPR stations in Florida.

NATIONAL:  American Public Television Stations

American Public Television Stations is a lobbying group for PBS stations coordinating with Jerry Carr and Marlene Ross throughout the year.

APTS is the primary national lobbying group for PBS stations across the country.  APTS contacts in Washington, D.C. coordinate on a regular basis with Marlene Figueroa Ross throughout the year through "action alerts" and other messages involving urgent funding issues for public television stations.  Marlene Figueroa Ross processes the information and makes phone calls and sends e-mail messages to the appropriate members of the U.S. Congress who represent WXEL's viewing and listening area.  This U.S. Congress members include U.S. Representatives such as Congressman Ron Klein,  Congressman Alcee Hastings, and Congressman Robert Wexler along with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and U.S. Senator Mel Martinez.

NATIONAL:  Public Radio Station Advisory Advocacy Group

Marlene Ross Figueroa serves on this monthly group coordinated by Dustin Watson, NPR.

Marlene Figueroa Ross, the WXEL Dir.of Community Affairs, began representing WXEL on NPR's newly formed Public Radio Station Advisory Group in late 2008.  Marlene participates in monthly calls in order to strategize with other representatives from NPR stations across the country about funding issues and other issues of concern, such as emergency preparedness for public radio.  Dustin Watson of NPR leads the calls.
